we are live in downtown san jose where police are investigating the death of a woman. they believe she may have fallen from a high-rise. one of the largest man hunts in california history continues at this hour. the search for the fired police officer who has threatened to bring warfare to lapd. some rain here but a whopper of a system on the east coast. the north east is getting ready for what looks like a historic snowstorm. it's all ahead.

good morning. thank you for joining us on this friday morning, february 8th i'm pam cook. >> and good morning, i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic. steve is here. i stepped out the door the roads were wet. >> it's hit and miss. >> a little mist is all i saw. >> it didn't mist at my house. it definitely came in. i think a lot of you are still having some shower activity. a lot of this is heading out of the area. we are not done yet. it will be a partly cloudy, scattered shower day with highs in the 50s. 24 just on the other side of the tunnel we had a solo spinout. chp is there. someone was perhaps driving too fast. also the morning commute is looking good on 680 southbound. let's go tobacco to dave and -- let's go back to dave and pac.

streets are blocked off downtown as police investigate the death of a woman. janine de la vega is at the scene this morning with that police are saying about the case. janine. >> reporter: the coroner just arrived here on the scene. we are in downtown san jose at st. james street where one block is blocked off. it goes all the way to san pedro. this investigation death is of a 25-year-old woman. her body is laying here in the street. police say 911 calls started coming in just before 3:00 a.m.. someone heard a thump and went outside and saw a lady's body lying on the ground. she fell from the 11 story of the complex. people were with her at the time. they are investigating to see what happened. here's what a lieutenant had to say. police are leaning toward that this may have an accident.

they are talking to witnesses right now. at this point they do not believe that foul play was involved. again let's two to what that lieutenant had to say. >> we've contacted several reporting parties and a few witnesses so we are talking to them right now just to determine that happened. currently there is no signs of foul play. >> reporter: at this point, police are going to stay here on the scene at least for another hour. again, the coroner has just arrived and they are continuing to follow up with their investigation. we are told the homicide unit is not coming out here again. at this point police believe that this may have just been a horrible accident. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. time is 5:02. one of california's largest policeman hunts ever is still going on this morning. they are searching for former l.a. police officer christopher dorner. he is accused of killing a police officer.

this man hunt covers the entire state and from nevada to mexico. investigators think dorner may be hiding in the snowy mountains of big bear. ktvu tara moriarty is live in our newsroom right now. tara, you are tracking this trail. what do you know now? >> reporter: authorities say the rugged terrain in big bear and over night snow could provide dorner with cover. 125 officers are scouring the area for the man that is considered armed and dangerous. schools in big bear were on lock down and area ski resorts closed. l.a. police chief says all classes should resume this morning and businesses should open. sheriffs deputies and local police in big bear have been going door to door warning of the 33-year-old. they are also conducting aerial searches and using canine units to try to track him. his burned out pickup truck was found on a forest road. he is still targeting law enforcement and a threat to the greater community. >> this has gone far enough.

nobody needs to die. >> reporter: the entire state of california is under a tactical alert. the search for dorner has extended to arizona, mexico, and nevada where he homes -- where he owns a home near las vegas. coming up we will tell you specifically what clues law enforcement will be looking for today in their efforts to find dorner. live from the newsroom i'm tara moriarty. time is 5:04. one example of how this man hunt has police officers on edge. yesterday lapd officers shot a 71-year-old woman. believing she may have been that armed gunman. the woman was delivering newspapers with her daughter. police mistook their truck for his truck. and the 71-year-old was shot twice in the back. this morning she is listed in stable condition. dorner posted a manifesto explaning why he went on that shooting rampage.

you can find his explanation on our channel 2 website ktvu.com. we will bring you updates throughout the morning. police in san pablo are asking for your help in search for two dangerous armed robbers. they want everyone to take a close look at this surveillance tape. it was taken at the formers market on rum result boulevard. you can see one man taking cash and cigarettes. a second man that you can't see in this tape ordered an employee and customer on the floor then shot them both in the leg. both victims are now recovering. time is 5:05. later today president obama will lead the farewell ceremonies for outgoing defense secretary lee crop panetta -- for leon panetta. his nominee for cia director john bener faced pretty tough questioning. coming up what brenham had to say about the cia use of water

boarding. 5:05 is the time right now. the roads are a bit wet. you need to take your time. >> yeah. when i was driving in i had to use the windshield wipers. steve will let you know more about that. i will let you know there have been a couple solo spinouts as people may have been driving too fast for the conditions. this is a look at 80 westbound. there are no major problems here as you continue down to the maze and that area. also the morning commute looks pretty good if you are driving on 80 westbound. it's a nice looking drive to the bay bridge toll plaza and beyond into san francisco. and the morning drive on the nimitz freeway looks good from hayward to fremont. not a bad drive at all. you see 13 minutes later on in the morning i think it will be a lot more than that. this might be your opportunity to get on that road. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. our system is rotating out. in fact, it looks like most of the snow so far is ending up in

the sierra, nevada. although there will be scattered showers. there is another piece of energy coming down right there. the bulk of the energy has moved toward monterey and peninsula. it's heading south pretty fast. san francisco third of an inch. they were the leader of the pack. sfo quarter of an inch. . san jose .08. there is the system coming down on the backside of that coming right on down. parts of maybe lake county into northern napa county and maybe the 680 corner. fremont over to livermore. maybe sunol grade as well. stretching from peninsula back over to san jose. look at where the bulk is going from santa cruz down to pebble beach. our low will rotate out. still sending in partly cloudy skies. a cool and breezy day with scattered showers. and again we are not done yet.

we will be done by tonight and tomorrow. 50s on the fetches. low 52 to 53. cold and windy on saturday and then sunny and warmer on sunday after a cold morning. next week looking dry and warmer. time now 5:08. boy a monster storm is heading to the east coast today and tomorrow and already hundreds of flights are canceled. our reporter torrey is live in boston. tell us how bad this storm will be. >> reporter: dave, some 23 million people are now under a blizzard warning. here in boston they are expecting the worst of this snowstorm to come through between 2:00 and 5:00 this afternoon. we are expecting to see high winds, and white out conditions and snows that will be measured in feet. getting out before it's too late. passengers at boston's logan airport hoping to dodge a monster blizzard.

>> it will be crazy later. i'm glad it's calm right now. >> reporter: snowfall totals could top 2.5 feet in some parts of the northeast. in new york the mayor is optimistic. >> having it happen over night friday into saturday is probably as good timing as we could have. >> reporter: from new jersey to maine thousands of pieces of equipment are standing by. >> we are highly unused to this. we also want to remind everyone to use common sense. stay off the streets of our city. basically stay home. >> reporter: earlier this week the region marked the 35th anniversary of the deadly blizzard of 1978. there are some similarities between that historic beast and what is brewing today. the outcome will not be quite as dramatic. >> the '78 blizzard stalled for quite awhile. this storm too may look like it may stall. instead of stalling for two to three days, it may be more in

graves. most of the problems happened when the head stones and markers were temporarily removed and cleaned. the va says it's correcting the errors and has new policies in place to prevent such problems in the future. new report shows veterans are continuing to face long waits. set argyll of veterans con compensation claims. a new analysis by the center for investigative reporting show the number of veterans waiting longer than four months has increased since then. a spokesman says the agency is expecting to decrease the wait time by next year. time now 5:14. turnover continues in president obama's second term. later today the president says goodbye to defense secretary leon panetta. as jacqueline fell reports the president's nominee for cia director had a tough day yesterday on capitol hill. >> reporter: leon panetta heads

to work for his last day of defense secretary. the focus stays on john brennan. he faced tough questions regarding information leaks the use of drones, and issue of interrogations. dianne feinstein leads the senate's intelligence committee. they wanted to know if he agreed to the use of water boarding. he was top cia brass. he previously said he believed those techniques led to getting information that saved lives. >> water boarding is something that never should have been employed and as far as i'm concerned never will be if i have anything to do with it. >> reporter: brennan also had to answer to the use of drones. another big hot topic on the hill this week. his response when i see you next. reporting live in washington, jacqueline fell ktvu channel 2 news. texas governor rick perry isment cooing here to

california trying to lure businesses away to texas. now his visit kicks off sunday. it will includes stops in silicon valley and los angeles. this follows a big radio campaign where governor perry urges businesses to move to texas. he also touts the fact that texas has no personal state income tax. authorities are scaling back a search for a missing man in santa rosa. but family members are not giving up hope. searchers have spent six days looking for 35-year-old jason kyle of sacramento. investigators say a hiker spotted him naked and chanting on saturday but he has not been seen since. family members say he is disupon tent over personal issue. they plan to carry on the search and asking for volunteers to help them. golfers will tee off for

day two. there are plenty of famous faces on the links including former secretary of state condoleezza rice. not bad. it looks like she was in the sand maybe. she is getting her first taste of big time golf on pebble beach. he started playing golf five years ago when she was mid way through her tenure of secretary of state. >> you ask me how did it compare to diplomacy. well, i know how to do diplomacy. >> i think she will be here more playing golf than what she did. >> two golfers share the lead after round one. >> i think i can handle condoleezza rice on the golf course. >> well, maybe she will accept the challenge. >> i'm dreaming though. time now 5:17.

out until 10:00. the snow has tapered off but it will pick up. 30s on the temps. 40s. coldest air rises about noon today. tonight and tomorrow and even into sunday morning very cold. one heck of a system developing. you can see the system exploding off the carolinas heading up and merging with another system. the combination of the two mean areas around boston north. possibility of one to fourisms of snow around new york. and then also out toward the atlantic. this is a whopper of a system. it will be the big story over the weekend. for us a couple scattered showers around. back over toward san jose and milpitas. it looks like things are really quieting down. the bulk of the activity. they will be in line today more than anybody else. 50s on the temps here. 52-53. i would show more temps. cold tomorrow morning and windy

as that low drops south. and then a cold, cold sunday morning. >> thank you, steve. european markets are starting the day with gains after the european central bank reignited hopes it could lower interest rates again. germany reported the 2012 exports hit the record high. china reported its exports sent most asian markets soring. many companies rush to complete inport and export orders. japan bucked the trend dropping almost 2% though. that was led by sony which reported a $115 million loss. checking in on the u.s. markets and where we start the day. slight gains yesterday with dow jones starting today at 13,944. and i'm just getting a fresh look at the futures right now. they do indicate a bit of a mixed opening.

the u.s. justice department is looking at suing moody. the government is likely to hold off until a similar lawsuit against rival standard and poors is tested in the courts. both ratings services are accused of inflating some mortgage bonds. if you drank, how the price of alcohol could effect your life. details of a new study and how the price tag of that drink may keep some people alive. and out of this world science project becomes a youtube sensation. the local students who is behind it.

welcome back. a houston woman is facing vehicle homicide charges in a super bowl tragedy. they were killed in a suspected drunk driving accident. it happened just outside of new orleans just hours after sunday night's super bowl. prosecutors have filed felony charges against the 26-year-old woman for the deaths of brian and alice young. louisiana state police say she was drunk when she plowed into the couples car several mile from the super dome. increase in alcohol prices could help reduce the number of alcohol related deaths. canadian researchers found that deaths caused by alcohol in 2002 to 2009 dropped in british

columbia when the minimum price of alcohol increased. a 10% increase led to a 32% decrease in alcohol related deaths. the u.s. does not have a minimum price for alcohol. plans to redo coit tower has stalled. he wanted to sell crab and shrimp sandwiches from a food cart outside. but the public health department says seafood is not on the list of foods allowed to be sold from food carts. a science project by an antioch student is becoming a human hit on youtube. lauren put a hello kitty doll in a small rocket and launched it into the atmosphere. she was trying to test the effects of altitude and air pressure on temperature. the balloon burst at 93,000

the roads are wet. you need to give yourself extra time. also looking a the the commute on westbound highway 4 this commute looks pretty good getting up to the willow pass grade. now let's go back to the desk. time now 5:31. we have breaking news coming in from san jose. the police are investigating the death of a woman it happened a little while ago at a downtown condo building. ktvu janine de la vega is right there and i know that witnesses are being questioned. janine. what do you know? >> reporter: that is right. police have roped off this block here at st. james street and san pedro because of this investigation. now this all centered around this building that you see here to the left. it's called the city heights condo complex. it's 15 stories high. we are being told that a woman fell from one of the balconies here. they started getting 911 calls around 3:00 a.m.. one person heard a loud thump. another called in reporting a person on the ground.

police reported and found a body of a 21-year-old woman on the street. after talking to witnesses it appears she fell from the 11th story balcony. they are trying to piece together what happened. >> we have a few witnesses we looking at and speaking to so she wasn't alone. i'm leaning toward it being accidental. no signs of foul play. that is why we called the coroners office. >> reporter: again at this point police not suspect this is a suicide or that foul play was involved. they are not calling in homicide investigators right now. the coroner is is the on the scene. we are told the victims relative has spoken to officers and at this point it is unclear if this william lived here. we'll continue to follow this and have any updates as the morning continue. reporting live janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. new this morning san jose police have rearrested a man that have slipped away from officers. 32-year-old anthony sanchez was

taken into custody last night at about 11:30. officers first air forced him on wednesday -- first arrested him on wednesday after a parole violation. shortly after that police say witnesses reported seeing a man with dangling handcuffs steal a truck from a 7-eleven parking lot. he was later spotted at a jack in the box before being arrested. former los angeles police officer bent on revenge is still on the loose this morning. it was this time yesterday morning we first reported that 33-year-old christopher jordan dorner was suspected of shooting three police officers in river side county. he was already wanted on charges of killing a young irvine couple last weekend. a massive man hunt stretches across southern california and parts of nevada, arizona, and mexico. now this morning even the big bear resort area the ski area there is under emergency lock

down. after investigators found his burned up truck. the rugged terrain could provide him some cover in that area. 125 officers have been brought in to the area to look for him. dorner is considered extremely dangerous with military and survival training. >> the search continues for dorner. they still have aerial searches, ground searches and door to door searches going on. >> there are extra police patrols at schools and ski resorts in the area. dorner is accused of killing an irvine man and his fiance. the daughter of a police captain who handled dorners appeal after getting fired from the department back in 2009. dorner is also accused of first wounding an officer in corona and killing a river side officer and seriously wounding his partner. we are learning more about

the 18 page mantes foe that dorner posted online. he addressed it to america. coming up the random thoughts of an accused killer, the reason for the rampage, and the message to celebrities. including brad pitt to first lady michelle obama. time now 5:35 happening right now would you believe it's snowing on the east coast. a dangerous huge storm is moving into the east coast. this is a live picture central park in new york. look in the distance. you with already see in the park it's white. a little bit of snow on the ground. and the roads are wet out there. emergency teams are getting ready for the worst. they expect this to be a historic super storm. a lot of schools in massachusetts they have already canceled school for today and people are being urged take the day off. stay at home. now let's take a look at la guardia airport in new york. just a short time ago a lot of

passengers there have got the look of people that are stranded. they are not going anywhere. you can see the advisory boards it will up with canceled flights all over the country. more than 3,000 flights have already been canceled nation- wide and many more expected throughout the day. and that east coast storm is effecting passengers right here in the bay area. kara lou is at sfo. you talked to passengers. this could be a big headache far lot of people. >> reporter: it sure is. i just talked to the -- the number of flight cancellations has been steadily creeping up this morning here at sfo. it is because of that big storm in the northeast. again, a look at the la guardia lines. airports in boston and new york are going to feel some of the biggest travel impacts from this blizzard. back here at sfo traffic has picked up in the last hour. as i mentioned, a number of

cancellations on the board and that means a lot of folks trying to go from the bay area to the northeast have been scrambling. >> yeah. i was originally supposed to fly out into jfk today. that was canceled i was bumped on to a flight tomorrow. that was canceled. i had to book another ticket to get myself into washington and rent a car and drive up. >> reporter: the very latest from sfo 55 cancellations so for this morning. 38 are departures. we have also been checking with san jose in oakland. so far they are not posting any storm related delays or cancellations but that is likely to change at some point later today. for now we are live at sfo cara liu ktvu channel 2 news. tonight a candle light vigil will be held in fairfield to remember the life of janell conway allen. her body was found one week ago

today. police are not revealing how she was skilled. tonight's vigil begins at 6:30. the community is asked to wear purple which was her favorite color. f detectives in sonoma county say they are following several strong leads in tuesday's triple homicide. three men were found shot to death inside a home in forestville. investigators link the killings to a botched marijuana deal. one of the men killed grew up in petaluma and avid snow border. detectives went to truckee to interview other snow borders who knew him. they are also following leads on the other two victims that were out of state. time is 5:38. muni warning commuters about a big jump in theft and electronics. there was an 83% increase in those thefts. more than 400 cell phones were

stolen in 2012. and over half of the robberies involve some kind of stolen electronic device. we want to go back over to sal. check in on the traffic. you reported a few things. spinouts and such. >> when it's wet we have higher incident of collisions out there. let's take a look at what we have on east 80. there is a report of a car there that ran into one of the medians there. and the traffic is actually moving along pretty well westbound on 80. but eastbound there could be activity pretty soon. let's take a look at westbound bay bridge as you drive at the toll plaza there is a small delay. no major problems come into the city. if you are driving on eastbound 92 there is a crash an injury crash on the shoulder. the problem so the emergency vehicles may be in the right lane. eastbound 92. westbound traffic not effected so far. let's go to steve. thank you, sal.

foul play. on the east coast a monster storm is about to hit the east coast. more than two feet of snow maybe four feet in some areas expected to fall in several states. more than 3,000 flights have already been canceled all over the country because of this storm. that includes several flights from right here in the bay area. the former l.a. police officer accused of a deadly shooting rampage is still out there on the run. christopher dorner is suspected of killing a young couple in irvine and river side county police officer. the man hunt is under way in three states as well as mexico. investigators did find that. that is his burned out truck in the big bear resort area in san bernardino county yesterday. investigators are pouring over the 18 page manifesto dorner posted on his facebook page. he addressed the manifesto to

america. he doesn't fear death because he already died on january 2nd, 2009. current oakland police consultant bill bratton was the police chief at the time. >> i don't recall him. and i don't recall the specifics set of circumstances for which i fired him. >> now in his manifesto he complimented several celebrities. they include ellen degeneres and michelle obama. dorner sent a package to cnn anchor anderson cooper. it contained a dvd and post it note that reeds i never lied. there is also a souvenir coin he gives out to people heading out to seas for military coin. the coin was riddled with a

bullet hole. 7.1 quake hit the solomon islands. the quake hit over night. about 14 miles south of the solomon islands. so far no damage or injuries have been reported. now the latest quake is putting a hamper on relief efforts from the quake and tsunami two days ago. more than 100 demonstrators protested police brutality in san francisco. >> justice for kevin clark. >> now that protest was sparked by this viral video you are looking at. it shows a clash two weeks ago between kevin clark and two san francisco police officers at 24th and mission. the police department says the officers acted appropriately to apprehend clark who they say was assaulting someone on the sidewalk. >> from what i have seen in the video and the rest of the staff don't see anything
